I suspect we’re not the only ones who live in an area where the power companies are (dramatically) increasing what they charge for power. On the one hand… ugh! On the other hand… challenge accepted!
When I get out of my lazy, instant gratification brain, I’m actually excited about the power bill going up. My hope is to drive ours lower, not just keep it from going up with the increased cost. And really, I guess this is what it’s going to take to get us less dependent on the grid. Ironic, isn’t it? At the end of the day, the very source of the problem might provide us with the antidote.
So on that note, we’ve being hanging our laundry to dry and all of that good stuff. We’re still hand washing our dishes. I’m not convinced that we could possibly be using more power than a dishwasher. First of all, we start the sink with an inch to an inch and a half of water and then we rinse in the soapy water side which keeps the water warm and topped up. Need to let something soak? We’ve pretty much always got a kettle on the woodstove and can use that.
And when you add in the fact that you have to buy the dw, get rid of the old one, and so on, well, I’m just not convinced that using a dishwasher could be either more ecological or cheaper.
So, that’s just one of the things we’re doing. The other thing is more and more woodstove cookery – but more on that later 😉
